Chapter 01A quarry and a promise
In 2002 three Lawton families, two of them Army, bought forty acres of pasture on the road to the mountains. They wanted a place their own parents could grow old in without leaving the county, and they built the Commons from red granite cobbles hauled in from the west.
Chapter 02The first residents
The Commons opened in the spring of 2003 with eighteen apartments and a dining room that seated forty. The first resident, a retired schoolteacher named Opal, planted the iris bed by the front door. It still blooms every April.
Chapter 03Adding the Juniper wing
By 2010 residents kept asking the same question: what happens when I need help? The answer was the Juniper wing, twenty-six assisted living suites connected to the Commons by a glass hallway, so nobody has to change dining rooms or friends.
Chapter 04People who stay
Fourteen of our staff have been here ten years or longer. Carol Ann has worked nights since 2011. Rosa started in the laundry. Annette started at the leasing desk. Residents notice, and so do families.
Chapter 05What we promise now
We will tell you the truth about costs, call you when something changes, and never rush a resident through a meal, a bath or a conversation. That was the founders' promise and it is still ours.
